Dear Ms. Peerloff: [salutation ]
MODIFIED BLOCK FORMAT [subject line]
This letter is arranged in modified block format. In this letter format the date and closing lines (complimentary close, name of the writer, and the writer’s title) begin t or near horizontal center. In block format all letters parts begin at the left margin. [body]
Mixed punctuation ( a colon after the salutation and a comma after the complimentary close) is used in this example. Open punctuation (no mark after the salutation or complimentary close) may be used with the modified block format if you prefer.
The first line of each paragraph may be blocked as shown here or indented one-half inch. If paragraphs are indented, the optional subject line may be indented or centered. If paragraphs are blocked at the left margin, the subject line is blocked, too.
A block format letter is enclosed so that you can compare the two formats. As you can see, either format presents an attractive appearance.
Sincerely yours, [complimentary closing]
Derek Alan [writer]
Manager [writer’s title]
KA [reference initials]
Enclosure [enclosure notation]
